Micro-Needing

Dermapen is an FDA-approved electronic device that uses multiple fine needles to vertically pierce the skin. This causes collagen remodeling and enhances skin rejuvenation. Unlike needle rollers, Dermapen uses a precisely-controlled stamping method to reach a set depth in the skin while minimizing excess damage to the epidermis.

Medical Micro-Needling is a treatment that constitutes a form of Collagen Induction Therapy(CIT). It is also referred to as a non ablative skin treatment. This means that the deeper parts of the skin are treated without removing the top layer of skin. It is designed to treat various skin conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, light scarring from acne and photodamage, and to improve skin colour and other skin texture changes. Clinical studies have shown professional micro-needling to be comparable to fractional laser treatment.

The idea behind Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is similar to that of many other non-surgical skin-tightening procedures in that it aims to create a controlled injury underneath the skin's surface, thereby inducing the body to respond through the formation of new tissue layers of elastin- and collagen fibres (neo-collagenesis) as well as new capillaries for an improved blood supply (neo-angiogenesis) in the treated area. The skin plumps and thickens in response to this stimulus, ultimately reducing the appearance of scars, and fine lines and other skin texture changes. In addition to CIT, the channels made from the micro-needles allow topical gels and creams to be absorbed more effectively through the top layer of skin. Studies of CIT have shown that an approximate 200% increase in collagen was seen from needle penetration alone.

It can take between 6-8 weeks before visible signs of skin regeneration are seen and the process will continue to evolve over the ensuing months providing a gradual improvement. Although a single treatment can provide a noticeable result, ideally however a series of treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart, is recommended to achieve optimal results .

The collagen grid becomes thinner and fragile as we age and the visible results are wrinkles. This age related or photo-damage induced collagen shrinkage can be compensated by micro-needling. In order to stabilize and maintain this improvement we recommend micro-needling sessions every year. During the initial 3-6 micro-needling treatments, that should be 4 to 6 weeks apart, between treatments we recommend the use of suitable home care products.

Q&A about Dermapen Micro-Needing Treatments

Q. How is the treatment administered?
A. Skin needling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of the sterile DermaPen needle head. The procedure is normally completed within 30-60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site. Before the procedure starts a topical anaesthetic will be applied to your skin to ensure a comfortable experience. After the skin is numbed, the technician gently moves the DermaPen over the your skin to puncture the epidermis layers of the skin and create miniscule sub-cutaneous injuries. These microscopic wounds stimulate new collagen deposition which may last for up to a year, yet they close within less than an hour.

Q. What is the skins appearance after the treatment?
A. After the procedure the client’s skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. The client will also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.

Q. How quickly are results visible?
A. Visible results of skin rejuvenation are generally seen after just 6-8 weeks following procedure and improve further over time. A course of DermaPen sessions, is usually recommended to achieve optimum results; however skin improvement is noticeable after just one treatment.

Q. Is the Dermapen safe?
A. Skin needling does not involve injections and therefore allergic reactions and side-effects are unlikely to occur. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (circa 24hrs), rapid healing and requires simple after-care.

Q. What are the indications for having a Dermapen treatment?
Skin needling is especially effective for aging concerns such as wrinkles, lines, folds and crows feet. Because collagen is produced, scars and stretch marks can also improve from treatments especially indented acne scars or chicken pox scars. Pigmentation issues can be helped including hyperpigmentation as well as Hypo-pigmentation, although pre treatment assessment and preparation here is essential. General lack of skin radiance, skin firmness and compactness are also an indication for skin needling treatments and visible improvements can be seen.

Q. What are the contraindications of skin needling treatments?
A. Contraindications and precautions include; keloid or raised scarring; history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions; history of actinic (solar) keratosis; history of Herpes Simplex infections; history of diabetes; presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include; scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities; Rosacea and blood clotting problems; active bacterial or fungal infection; immuno-suppression; scars less than 6 months old; and facial fillers in the past 6 months.

Q. Are there any side effects or risks associated with skin needling?
A. Side effects experienced with the DermaPen will usually subside within 24-48 hours. They include erythema, stinging, itching, tightness of the skin.

Q. How many treatments are necessary to achieve a good response?
A. Improvement is seen with each treatment but a series of 6 treatments is best to achieve optimal results.
Rule of thumb for skin improvement:
  • After 1st procedure: 30-40%
  • After 2nd procedure: about 50% of the 1st treatment
  • After 3rd procedure:  about 50% of the 2nd treatment
  • In total: 50- 70% overall improvement after only 3 treatments.

Q. How far apart are treatments done?

A.Dermapen treatments can be repeated every 4-6 weeks.

Q. Is Dermapen safe for darker skin types?
A. Since no melanin-absorbing laser and no heat are involved, the Dermapen is relatively safer than lasers, such as IPL, for darker skin types..

Q. Who performs the treatments?
A. One of our medical practitioners will perform your treatment.

Q. Is Dermapen painful?
A. Dermapen uses very fine needles and is relatively comfortable. A topical numbing cream is all that is needed.

Q. How long is each treatment?
A. For a face, each treatment is 30 to 60 minutes.

Q. How is Dermapen different than a needle roller?
A. Needle rollers also use needles for skin resurfacing but are often too large and unwieldy for tight areas. They are also dependent on hand pressure, so the depth of penetration varies depending on the the amount of pressure exerted and the softness of the skin, while the Dermapen depth of penetration is set precisely with an electornic dial. There is also lateral trauma to the skin when the needles on a roller pull out of the skin as the wheel turns. This does not happen with the Dermapen, which relies only on vertical needle action.

Q. Can you receive a Dermapen treatment if pregnant?
A. Skin needling is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women due to a number of minor reasons. The needles produce micro-injuries which trigger the natural wound healing response. This wound healing and production of new collagen requires vitamins and nutrients which would otherwise be needed for the baby so is suggested to not be used during pregnancy.

Q. How does the DermaPen work?
A. As the Dermapen stamps over your skin, it creates micro-point punctures in the skin, the majority of which are simply pushing your pores open temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process. You encourage your skin to continue healing through this micro-needling process. Your skin normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are repaired, but with the Dermapen auto-stamp micro-needling treatments, the skin is tricked into repairing itself. The process of micro-needling skin remodeling can go on for months after each Dermapen treatment. Results can be seen within a week or even a few days. Your skin naturally heals itself every 45 days, so with a little micro-needling stimulation changes can be dramatic and fast.

Q. What are the immediate after-effects?
A. There is redness and very minimal bleeding.
